The modern sport of soccer, known as football in most countries outside the United States and Canada, evolved over centuries and has no inventor. Instead, soccer has roots in various ball games played by ancient civilizations worldwide.
However, the codification of modern soccer can be attributed to England in the 19th century. The soccer rules as we know them today were formalized in England during the mid-19th century when various football clubs and schools began to standardize the game.
One significant event in the history of soccer was the formation of The Football Association (FA) in England in 1863. The FA established the game’s rules, including prohibiting handling the ball (except by the goalkeeper) and banning violent or dangerous tactics.
The first official soccer match under modern rules is believed to have occurred between two English teams, Barnes and Richmond, in 1863.
While England played a crucial role in developing and popularising modern soccer, it’s important to recognize that similar ball games were played in various forms across different cultures throughout history. For example, games resembling soccer were played in ancient China, Greece, and Mesoamerica, among other regions.
